    7 Reasons to Shop With 7 Reasons

    You’ve laughed with us, you’ve cried with us, you’ve watched us, you’ve read us, you’ve heard us, you’ve written for us, you’ve tweeted with us, you’ve got engaged with us, you’ve had a baby with us and probably other stuff too.  And now, in a new and exciting development, you can shop with 7 Reasons.  And here are seven reasons that you should.

    1. Be Unique.  Everyone wants to feel distinctive, unique and a bit special.  And, if you purchase a 7 Reasons t-shirt, the chances are very high that it will actually be unique.  After all, how many people are you likely to bump into in your local pub wearing the same Haystack Poking Patrol t-shirt as you?  And even in the unlikely event that you did meet someone else in a pub wearing that same t-shirt, you could just say, “Hello Marc” and I’d probably buy you a beer.  You’ll be unique or you’ll get beer.  That sounds like a good deal.

    2.  To Marvel At The Emporium.  The 7 Reasons team have (amongst other things) expertise in web design and the retail sector.  You might think that this would make putting together an online shop easy.  But you’d be wrong.  Because in typical 7 Reasons style, the one with the retail background did the web design and the one with the web design background is in charge of the retail side of things (and did everything else).  So if it does crash or start randomly giving away free merchandise you’ll be there to witness/benefit.

    3.  Because Our Wares Are Really Jolly Good.  I didn’t have anything to do with the design of the lemon t-shirt (God or Darwin, depending on your viewpoint, designed the lemon and Jonathan Lee did the rest), so I can say this.  It’s bloody brilliant.  Look at it!  Just look at it!  It’s really a beautiful piece of design.  It’s a pop-art pie-chart in lemon.  Who wouldn’t want to wear that, other than the abjectly wrong and gits?  No one.

    4.  Innovation. Because the product range will grow as we think of more things to add.  We’re already looking into producing 7 Reasons Inspirational Beer-Mats, calendars and fridge-magnets, so you’ll never know what you might find there:  A 7 Reasons horse; a 7 Reasons handbag; a 7 Reasons his and his voodoo doll set; a replica 7 Reasons sofa.  Anything.  Or if you don’t find what you want, you might eventually, because…

    5.  We’re interactive.  We can’t think of everything.  We’ve tried and have gotten distracted by girls and tiramisu and things.  But we love great ideas and, if you’ve thought of something you’d like to see in the 7 Reasons shop that isn’t there, you can email us and, if we think it’s a good idea, we’ll look into making it.  And we’ll probably put your name on it too, unless it’s something really small – or embarrassing – in which case we won’t.  Or if you have a really long name like Bartholomew Constantine Washington Penderghast the third, we might not. But if you’re called Jennifer Aniston we definitely will, and that’s a promise.

    6.  Incentive.  Has any other website ever encouraged you to invade a country?  Yes, probably, but only evil ones.  We’re nice chaps though, and we’d like to encourage a more benign, civilised, conquest: So the first five readers that are photographed standing atop the Eiffel Tower waving a Union Flag and wearing one of our France Invasion t-shirts will get the money they spent on the t-shirt refunded.*

    7.  Because We’re Very Excited.   So excited, in fact, that we spent a couple of hours putting this post together about our shop and forgot to include a link to it.  So here it is (this is the link).  Now go and shop till you drop!  Or at least until your arms are very full and you feel a little faint.**

    *We can sometimes tell the difference between the Blackpool and Eiffel towers and we’re also quite good at spotting things that have been photoshopped so no tomfoolery, please.

    7 Reasons That Goats Should Stare at Men

    I’m sure we’re all familiar with the film, The Men Who Stare at Goats, which is based on the work of a secret psychic military unit.  But in that film they’re doing it wrong.  Men shouldn’t stare at goats.  Goats should stare at men.  It’s obvious.  Here are seven reasons why.

    1.  Men Are More Interesting Than Goats.  This it not universal, as anyone who’s ever seen the queue in a Homebase on a wet Thursday afternoon or viewed the bits between the sport on Sky Sports will testify, but generally, it is true.  After all, men build things; men wage war; men get drunk; and fall over; men morris dance.  Goats on the other hand, do not.  Goats stand; goats chew; goats stand some more; goats sit down.  That’s pretty much it as far as goats go.  If you want to know how relatively interesting goats and men are, just look at the internet.  The ratio of men to goats depicted online is 999999999999999999:1*.  The evidence is overwhelming.

    2.  It’s Less Dangerous For Them Than Staring At Women.  Anecdotal evidence suggests that, in the UK, you are more likely to be physically assaulted in a pub car park by an addled simpleton enquiring, “Are you staring at my bird?” than in any other circumstance.**   And this is a scenario that goats are just fundamentally ill-equipped to deal with.  Rather than diffusing the situation by calmly and rationally replying, “Yes, but in a curious, rather than a lecherous way.  Is her skin naturally that orange?  Did she apply her mascara with a spoon?  Shouldn’t someone be holding her hair back while she’s vomiting?” a goat would just stand there, being a goat.  If they stared at women, our pub car-parks and city centres would be full of hyper-aggressive drunkards punching goats every weekend to the soundtrack of “leave him Gary, he’s not worth it”.  No one wants that, except Gary.  And he’s an idiot.

    3.  Conscience.  In the modern secular age, where our notion of an all-knowing God and right and wrong are becoming ever more confused and blurred, we all need a little help and guidance every now and again.  And what better way to make men consider their actions than by having a goat stare at them.  After all, there are many, many things that you might conceivably do when alone that you would not do when a goat was looking at you.  These include:

    • Picking things.
    • Scratching things.
    • Rubbing things.
    • Pulling things.
    • Poking things.
    • Looking at things.
    • Other stuff with things.

    Could you look at pornography if a goat was staring at you?  No.  Could you pick the pocket of a nun if a goat were staring at you?  No.  Could you have sex with a goat if a goat were staring at you?  No.***  If goats stared at us, we’d live better lives.

    4.  Time-Saving.  If you’re a man you’re probably thinking, I won’t have time to look after a goat.  I have important things to do, I have trains to look at and pants to file and whatnot.  But you’d be wrong.  Your staring-goat would actually save you time as you’d never, ever need to mow the lawn again.  Nor, if you already do this, would you need to go and chew the local playing field for half an hour every day, your goat could do that for you too.  Being stared at by a goat is like being given the gift of time.

    5.  Education.  Goats will get something from the whole staring at men deal too.  They’ll learn from us.  After all, goats haven’t evolved or significantly changed their lifestyle since they first appeared on the planet (unless they evolved from geese, in which case, well done goats, do carry on).  By staring at men, they might learn to do something other than standing in a field and staring at men.  They might evolve to use tools, to walk upright, to tell time or even learn to read books, instead of eating them.  Goats will benefit.

    6.  Responsibility.  This is not universally the case, but many men lack a sense of responsibility and really only get one when fatherhood is thrust upon them.  But being the keeper of a staring goat would engender that sense of responsibility.  After all, there’s nothing like having to feed something, teach it right and wrong (not to butt the television except when East Enders is on, not to gore the cat with its horns etc) to make you realise that you have other things to think about than whether your shoes are a slightly different colour to each other, or whether the light on the floor varies significantly over the 15cm gap between them causing them to appear different…Nope, it’s the light.  Right, where was I?  Oh yes, and the ladies will love you when they see you tenderly strapping your goat into the back of the car before setting off on journeys.  They’ll see you as potential breeding material, so you’ll be more sexually successful.  Though you will have to perform with a goat staring at you, good luck with that.

    7.  Trains.  Men – despite the Clint Eastwood/John Wayne/Buster Keaton strong, silent stereotypes – are gregarious social creatures for whom being alone can lead to loneliness, and that lack of socialization can in turn lead to eccentricity, outright weirdness and a penchant for trains.  The company of a staring goat would prevent men becoming lonely and developing strange habits, which would eventually lead to the demise of trainspotting as a pastime.  It would probably also lead to the end of model aeroplane building and World of Warcraft, so bring on the goats, I say.  Oh, and please send my next-door neighbour his first, as the sounds of his model trains are audible in my loft at night.  And they interfere with me cataloguing my button collection.****

    *This figure is made up.  I don’t have time to count the internet just to illustrate that men are represented there in a far larger number than goats.

    **It’s interesting to note that no one, ever, in the history of drink-fuelled, envy-inspired, pub car-park assaults has commenced proceedings by uttering the phrase, “Are you staring at my fiancé?”

    ***It would be the wrong way round, for a start.

    7 Reasons You Shouldn’t Watch The American

    The new Anton Corbijn film – The American – starring George Clooney is out in the UK right now.  I saw it on Saturday, here are seven reasons that you shouldn’t. (and don’t worry, there are no spoilers)

    1.  The Unconcious.  The pace of the first half of The American is slow.  It’s so slow, in fact, that if anyone had said “so slow”, it would have come out as,  “sssssssssssssssssssssssssssooooooooooooooooooooooooo sssssssssssssssssssssssllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllooooooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww”.   Someone may even have said it, but I’m not sure, as I was dozing.  Not a deep and satisfying slumber, but the fitful sort where you find yourself alternating between brief bouts of consciousness and unconsciousness, with occasional forays into semi-consciousness and thoughts of what the hell is happening to me, is this what old age is like (ness).  So, I’ll sum up what I saw in the first half of the film (without spoilers).  I saw George Clooney living the soporifically mundane daily life of a hit-man.  In a series of slowly cut shots with no dialogue I watched him: Counting his bullets, drilling a series of small holes in some tips, oiling his mechanism (not a euphemism), polishing his barrel (nope, nor this), adjusting his sights, rearranging his small change on a table, lining up his fish fingers in size order, adding up all of the telephone numbers on his mobile and dividing them by four, testing the accuracy of his oven timer against his wristwatch (an Omega Speedmaster Professional with a black dial and black leather strap: model number 3870.50.31, I had time to note), comparing the shapes of his fingernails with his toenails, dusting his light bulbs, and staring into an empty fridge while over his head a strip-light buzzed  (I may be wrong on some of these, but if they weren’t there, it felt like they were).

    2.  The ConsciousThat’s not fair, you’re probably thinking, if you’d been awake, it probably wouldn’t have seemed that dull.  But I wasn’t the only person that was sleeping during the first half.  Because when I was in the toilet after the film, a man standing behind me said, “You were asleep during the first half” and, as I prepared to answer him, the man at the urinal next to me replied, “I know, it was really slow”.  It turned out that they were friends and that I wasn’t being addressed at all.  So there you have it.  Based on the available evidence, there are two distinct types of human-behaviour that occur during the first half of The American.  There are the Sleepers, who sleep, and then there are the Sleeper-Watchers who, while they have remained conscious, aren’t watching the film either; they’re watching people sleep so they can tell them about how they slept later, in great detail; “You kept leaning forward, and then you fell back, and then you leant forward, and then you fell back, and then you leant forward, and then you fell back, and then you said “chopsticks”, and then you fell back…”  was my personal Sleeper-Watcher’s epic account of my movements.  So, during the first half of the film, 50% of the audience are sleeping and the other 50% are watching them sleep and compiling a dossier on their movements, their utterances and their dribbling.  Which means that 100% of the audience are not watching the first part of the film.  That’s how dull it is.

    3.  Lust.  And then the second half of the film begins.  It begins with Violante Placido in bed with no clothes on and, in the words of my personal Sleeper-Watcher, “…you sat bolt upright and stared at the screen while breathing rapidly, remaining in that position for the rest of the scene, before you settled back in your seat and stayed awake for the rest of the film”.  So not only do you get a full report on how weird you are in your sleep, you get a full report on how lecherous you are when you’re wide-awake too.

    4.  Clooney.  And then there’s Clooney. Now I understand that George Clooney’s playing an emotionless, calculating and reserved man.  But we see his bottom in The American, and I can state categorically, that his arse has a greater number of expressions than his face in this film.  Here is his full range of facial expressions in The American (sorry if you were hoping for an arse montage, though we do have one of those on the About Us page):

    5.  References.  During the film, in a scene where Clooney is counting the grains of salt contained in a salt cellar before he thinks about Switzerland for five minutes in a bar with formica tables, something distracting happens in the background.  There’s a film on the television.  It’s Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West.  God, I love that film, I thought.  It’s in my top ten films of all time.  Why aren’t I watching that?  Why in God’s name would you taunt the viewer by placing an iconic piece of cinematic brilliance within your own, not  brilliant, movie.  So, he’s made me fall asleep, he’s made me appear lecherous, he’s made me watch a man iron his vast collection of handkerchiefs with a lukewarm spoon, and now Anton Corbijn is actually taunting me.  He’s showing me a bit of a film that I love that’s better than the one he’s made and that I’m watching, I thought.  While screaming inwardly.

    6.  The Pants.  And then there are the pants.  Violante Placido, for reasons I won’t bore you with, decides to disrobe (except for her pants) and go swimming in a river.  But why would anyone take all of their clothes off except for their pants?  Then they’d be wet once they got out of the water.  And they’d have to go home wearing wet pants.  And who wants to wear wet pants for an afternoon?  And I know that you’re thinking that it was for the sake of modesty, but it wasn’t.  Because they became completely transparent the moment they got wet, a fact that my Sleeper-Watcher noted later, before he informed me that I, “…sat bolt-upright and made some sort of involuntary tongue noise.  And didn’t blink for eight whole minutes” in reaction to this scene.  Three days later, after a great deal of thought, I still can’t fathom the pants.

    7.  The Ending.  Again, I won’t tell you what happens, but there’s a moment of awareness when someone alters the thing.  And when that person – whose gender I won’t digress – alters the thing that I won’t name, I had a moment of clarity.  I knew, in that instant, that the character that was going to do the deed would be thwarted by the one that altered the thing and that the other character that I also won’t name would eventually have to do the deed – not with the broken thing that had been altered, but – with another thing but that we hadn’t been introduced to, and that the deed would end badly.  Not only for the character who had been forced to do the deed with the new thing, but also for the character to whom the deed was being done, that countered the deed with his own thing, having previously sparking this chain of events by altering the initial thing in the first place.  And it was just bloody obvious that was going to happen a long time before the end.

    So, to summarise:  During the first half of the film you will fall asleep or resort to watching someone else sleep to keep you entertained; you will then be branded a pervert, be partially baffled by facial expressions, taunted by the director, and then wholly baffled by pants before eventually spotting the blatantly obvious ending many minutes before the film ends.  I don’t think ungoing is an actual thing, but I want to do it.  Right now.

    7 Reasons That The Correct Font is Important

    Fonts: Sometimes we don’t pay enough attention to them, but choosing the correct one is vital for your project; be it a full blown advertising campaign, a sign for your office, a Christmas card or a publicity photo. Here are seven reasons why.

    1.  Playfulness.  Kristen is a lovely, whimsical, childlike font which, when used correctly, imbues the work with a sense of playfulness and naivety.  When used incorrectly however, it is not as effective:

    The message Drive to the East was intended as a call to invasion and conquest.  This poster may still encourage people to drive East, but now they’ll be doing it in Smart cars whilst drinking Innocent smoothies and listening to Death Cab For Cutie.  The Kristen font is too jaunty for Hitler.

    2.  Menace.  Similarly, Fraktur is a font associated with much Nazi propaganda and many of their legal notices.  When used in this context however, it rather blurs the message:

    Even the sad face can’t rescue this one.  The font exudes menace and it makes it appear more of a threat than an appeal:  That if you don’t give them money, ranks of jack-booted stormtroopers will goose-step on poor Flopsy. :’-(  Still quite an effective message though.

    3.  Cool.  Some fonts – Sidewalk in this instance – are rather cool and edgy and, when used sparingly, can really make an impact.

    When making a sign for the office kitchen though, they tend to work less well.  The thoughts of the users of the office kitchen will probably range from, “What in god’s name is that abomination on the wall?!”  to, “Wow!  Emma’s like the coolest person ever to have put up a sniffy notice about washing teacups.  Ever.”

    4. Minimalism.  The moon: A cold, empty, stark place which requires an appropriately minimal font and, when putting together an article on whether man will return to the moon, it’s important to use one.  And not this:

    French Script really isn’t doing this picture any favours.  It’s over-elaborate, cluttered, and just not spacey enough.  And it’s French.  They’ve never been to the moon.  They rarely go as far as Sussex.

    5.  Seasonality.  Christmas: Evocative of roaring fires, presents, carol singing, peace, goodwill and happy families spending quality time together at home.

    But when your Christmas card features the Digital Readout Thick Upright font, you introduce the spectre of The Terminator into the traditional family Christmas, and that doesn’t seem like it will go well.  Even if he does bring presents from the future.

    6.  Clarity.  Clean crisp fonts such as Gill Sans exude class.  With a plain, unfussy font your carefully chosen words are showcased to their best advantage.  The BBC use Gill Sans, and the famous Volkswagen Lemon advert used a similar font.  Sometimes though, it’s not a good idea to go minimal:

    Because the reader’s attention is drawn to every error and mad utterance in your crazed internet rant.  And yes, I did cut and paste this from a comment on one of our posts.  Answers on a postcard?

    7.  Gasp! There’s a lot of snobbery around the use of MS Comic Sans.  And many perfectly reasonable people say that it should never, ever be used; there are websites and Facebook groups that campaign against it.  But they’re wrong.  Because I’ve found a use for it:

    You can use it to take perfectly good, artfully shot publicity photos, and make them funnier.  I’m so happy with this one that I’m not even going to charge for it.  Finally, a use for Comic Sans.

    1.  It’s Quicker By Rail. I’m sure it was, 75 years ago. Sadly, given the fact that my last foray on a train took a good deal longer than it took Neil Armstrong to get to the moon, I would suggest times have changed. And not for the better. It’s frustrating that this poster would now have to say, ‘It’s Quicker By Rail (Unless You Meet A Cow)’.

    2.  It Oozes Frenchness. This isn’t my usual anti-France and all things French rant, in fact, it’s made me think of Grace Kelly. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, unless you happen to be writing this in front of your girlfriend. Now, I’ll be the first to acknowledge that Grace Kelly isn’t French – or at least a close second behind her – but in the film To Catch A Thief, she did spend an awful lot of time poncing around with Cary Grant on the French Riviera. And frustratingly, this picture reminds me of that poncing. And if there are two things I can’t stand, it’s poncing and the French. Together.

    3.  The Woman. While the man looks like he’s a man, the woman looks like a statue. It’s disappointing for those of us who take female equality so seriously. You would never find 7 Reasons being so vindictive. That’s why, at all times, 50% of us are strictly male lesbians.

    4.  Visit Scarborough. It looks quite nice in the poster. If I had been alive back in 1927, I may have got on the train. Unfortunately, having found a photo of its current state and transposed it over the poster, I can see that it hasn’t really changed much. Which is why I now have little option but to pay the £108.40 and take the 5 hour 40 minute journey (plus cows).

    5.  Chivalry. I am naïve. I believe it when the older generation say, ‘it wasn’t like this in my day’. They are usually talking about manners. Or sex. But that was the wrong club at the wrong time, so really it’s just manners. People used to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, though not necessarily at the same time, and men with walking sticks would most definitely offer them to women with bad backs. Sadly, though this poster indicates that in fact man couldn’t care less. Which means the older generation have lied to me. Either that or this woman is in fact a statue.

    6.  It’s Joe. This man is Joe Scarborough. He’s the host of Morning Joe on MSNBC. In a past life he was also a politician. The only reason I know this is because I found numerous pictures of him while searching for a photo for Reason 4. Rather frustratingly, forever more, I will hold this useless piece of information about Joe Scarborough in my mind. No doubt at the expense of some fascinating fact about sausages.

    7.  The Man. He reminds me of Piers Morgan. And I’m not sure why. Which means it’s doubly frustrating. And as doubly frustrating things tend to do, they will no doubt occupy my mind for the rest of the day. Which in turn, of course, means I will be dreaming about Piers bloody Morgan tonight. Thank you BBC News Magazine. Not what I call a public service.

    7 Reasons To Keep Calm And Carry On

    1.  Decorum. Because a hubbub or a brouhaha would be unseemly.

    2.  Because You’re British. It’s what’s expected of you.  It’s what comes naturally.  Your reaction to an unforseen and potentially frightening event should be one of unflappable fortitude and apparent indifference.  No flapping.  Got that?

    3.  Consequences. If you should flap then someone with a plummy voice will be forced to administer a swift slap and command you to “pull yourself together”.  That constitutes a scene.  No one wants a scene.

    4.  Tradition. It’s what that formidable lady, Great Aunt Harriet, would have wanted.  She kept calm, probably in a winceyette nightgown.  I doubt there was much carrying on though.

    5.  Because It’s Relevant. It’s an iconic slogan that’s rooted deep in the past – though it was never actually used during World War II – but its message still holds good today.  Why worry about that double-dip recession that you can’t do much to influence?  Why worry about potential terrorist activity that you can’t stop?  Why worry about the man peering over your shoulder as you read this?  No, on second thoughts, do worry about him.  He’s probably up to no good.

    6.  Because The French Do Neither. We keep calm and carry on.  The French do not: They je ne sais quoi. On bicycles, probably.

    7.  Because You Are Told To.  Your poster demands it of you; your greetings card demands it of you; your t-shirt demands it of you; your mug demands it of you; the coaster on which your mug sits demands it of you; your key ring demands it of you; your fridge magnet demands it of you; your shopping bag demands it of you; your deckchair demands it of you; your cuff-links demand it of you; your sticking-plasters demand it of you; your tea-towel demands it of you; your chocolate bar demands it of you; your flight-bag demands it of you; your apron demands it of you; your rug demands it of you.  It’s bloody everywhere.  Seriously, if one more person buys me anything else that says “Keep Calm And Carry On” on it, I won’t be held responsible for my actions.  I will freak out and stop.

    Guest(ish) Post: 7 Reasons We Should Be Kept Well Away From Photoshop

    Today’s guest(ish) post comes to you courtesy of Marc Fearns, who can usually be found doing stuff here, and the amazing Ceci Masters of Swanning About fame; a blog so good that it’s in The Times’ list of the top 50 cricket blogs, along with the blog of another friend of 7 Reasons, Sarah Ansell, and forty-eight other blogs that we’re less interested in.

    This guest(ish) post is a little unusual.  It tells the tale of last Friday evening when, shamefully, Ceci and I were both at our homes, with our Photoshop software open.

    1.  Crouching Crouch Hidden Dragon. It started innocently enough.  Ceci – inspired by the film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon – produced this picture for the Facebook group, Hollywoodgate: Onde futebol e película cruzam.  She also put it on Twitter.

    2.  Hiding Crouch Tiger-Dragon. And Twitter is where I saw it, while I was in the middle of photoshopping something else  (a cat in a submarine, I think).  Anyway, I was struck by the wordplay potential so within five minutes, this was winging its way to Ceci.

    3.  Crouch’s Tiger Hiddink’s Dragon. Then, about five minutes after the previous picture, Ceci put this one up.  There was only one way that this was going to go.

    4.  Grouchy Tiger Smitten Crouch. We had become embroiled in a duel.  A frenzied maelstrom of a contest in which PCs were pistols and Crouch crouching crouchy tigery tiger tiger-dragons were our ammunition.  In short, we had lost the plot.  I made this one.  But girls are sensible, and you can always rely on them to stop the madness, can’t you?

    5.  Hiding Tiger Crouch With Drag On. No, it turns out that you can’t.  You can rely on them to take the madness and add big hair and sequins to it.

    6.  Crouch In Drag On Ridden Tiger. Now, Ceci’s previous picture was not only brilliant, it was also a bit frustrating, as I’d already got started on this one before I discovered that she’d used drag too.  But now that we’d started coming up with the same ideas we agreed that it was time to call a halt to things, and we established a truce.

    7.  Crouch In Tiger With A Bag On. The truce lasted a full three minutes or so, until I thought of this.

    That’s why Ceci and I should be kept well away from Photoshop but, like predatory beasts, we’ll be watching, waiting, ever-ready to pounce during the World Cup.  The moment that Crouch does anything that even remotely resembles the words tiger, dragon or hiding, one of us will strike.  Well, unless his solicitors get in touch which, on balance, seems entirely possible.

    7 Reasons We Love Propaganda Posters

    At 7 Reasons, we’re quite into war and propaganda, and recently, we’ve been putting together some bits and pieces that we’ve used propaganda posters in.  We’ve looked at an awful lot of them in the past couple of weeks, and we were astounded at the amount of brilliant posters that we’d never seen before.  We thought we’d show you some of the more obscure ones today.  We’re sure you’ll agree that each one of them is a reason to love propaganda posters.

    1.  Tell Her Nothing (1940).  Produced quite early into World War II, this extremely rare British poster proved so popular that as soon as the posters were put up, they would disappear – presumably stolen by amorous servicemen.  This woman was a more popular pin-up than Vera Lynn in the early war years.  We would tell her everything.  And give her the blueprints (whatever blueprints are).

    2.  He Volunteered For Sperm Donation (c. 1945).  Used by the Americans after the end of World War II, this poster encouraged virile men to donate their little swimmers to the wives and partners of soldiers killed in action. It was believed that a baby boom would help the economy recover.

    3.  Syphilis (c. 1944).  A poster used mainly in the Dorset area during the build-up to D-Day.  It was used to highlight the dangers of fraternising with the allies.

    4.  Who Smells Of Fish? (c. 1916).  In World War I, rationing meant that some foods such as fish were only able to be eaten on Friday. Many citizens ignored this order though and ate their fish on a Thursday. This campaign was created to scare those who cheated by implying that if you ate fish early you would smell.

    5.  For A Happy, Healthy Job…(c. 1940).  While the Battle of Britain was raging in the South-East of England, these posters were everywhere.  Women were encouraged to organise themselves and head out into the countryside to search for German airmen that had been shot down and gone into hiding.

    6.  Women Of Britain. Direct Our Planes! (c. 1943).  Due to the sun, it was hard for Allied pilots to focus on incoming German Bombers and Messerschmitts. The British devised a simple solution. They asked women to go out into the streets and point in the direction of the bastards. Our brave boys were able to look down and follow the direction of where the women were pointing. This simple but effective solution proved vital in winning the Battle of Britain.

    7.  Tell No One (1939).  In the early days of WWII, during the phoney war, it was easy to become overwhelmed by the media’s portrayal of the enemy.  This poster was issued by the Ministry of Health, to instruct British men on how best to deal with any psychological issues resulting from the constant media bombardment of war-stories.

    7 Reasons That We Should Run Manchester City

    We, the 7 Reasons team, have decided that we should branch out a bit and take on a new challenge.  We have no allegiances with Manchester City, but we have some great ideas on how we could improve the running of the club.  Here are 7 Reasons that we should run Manchester City.

    1.  Wisdom.  It is oft said that two heads are better than one.  There are two of us, and we have one head each.  That’s two heads.  Roberto Mancini only has one head.  Okay, so his is full of football knowledge and experience while our heads are full of words and Jennifer Aniston, but the two heads will make us a better manager than Mancini, conventional wisdom says so.  It is also said that many hands make light work.  We have twice as many of those as Mancini, so we should be able to make a substantial saving on the electricity bill too.

    2.  Bellamy.  Craig Bellamy is a brilliant footballer and is in the form of his life at the moment.  We’re only too aware, however, that he has, in the past, been an unsettling influence in many of the dressing-rooms that he has been in.  We want Craig Bellamy in our team, but we don’t necessarily want him in our squad.  We will construct a separate dressing-room for Craig Bellamy and hold solo training sessions for him.  This way he can continue to play for us on the pitch, but won’t disrupt our squad.  We did love it when he was annoying Alan Shearer at Newcastle though.  Annoying Alan Shearer should be a sport in its own right.

    3.  Bell End.  No, not Craig Bellamy again.  Colin Bell.  When the City of Manchester stadium was taken over by Manchester City, their supporters voted overwhelmingly to name an end of the stadium after their hero Colin Bell.  The club, after much procrastination, overruled this decision and eventually named the West Stand after him instead.  We would reverse their decision and name the North Stand after him, thus creating the Colin Bell End.  The West Stand would become The Hat Stand, The East Stand would become The Last Stand and the South Stand would become The South End, as it’s where Manchester United supporters live.  We would also reconstruct the car park, with a new lower level parking bay spanned by The Wayne Bridge, which will be vastly expensive and a bit wobbly.

    4.  Cars.  We don’t know why Stephen Ireland does this to cars, but enough is enough.  We’re banning him from the car park.  If it were within our power to ban him from the road as well, then we would.  He will be fined a week’s wages if any Manchester City fan ever sees one of his cars anywhere, and we’ll donate that money to the Royal National Institute for the Blind, who can use it to help car-lovers that have poked their own eyes out after witnessing his automotive abominations.

    5.  Human Cloning.  Carlos Tevez is brilliant.  He’s clearly one of the best players on the planet.  It’s not so much his skill that makes him amazing to watch, it’s his desire, his energy and his propensity for turning up in every area of the pitch.  We will put in place a human cloning programme to clone Tevez.  The technology’s almost there already so it won’t be too many years before we’re able to field a whole team of Carlos Tevez, from 1-11.  Not only will they be able to outrun and outplay the opposition, they’ll also scare them silly.  What’s more, our Tevez Cloning Facility will be based in England, which will ensure that the national team will be successful for years to come too.  In order to guard all of the silverware that we’re going to win, we’ll manufacture Tevez security guards – possibly with wings and/or hooves – to guard the trophy room.  We will rule the football world and, eventually, we may use an army of them to take over the actual world.  Try not to concern yourself about that though.

    6.  Scarves.  At least 50% of the 7 Reasons team already own a sky blue scarf, so there’ll be no need for all of the supporters to go out and buy yet another new scarf in imitation of us.  We will also implement a new rule that nobody may knot their scarf in the same way as the person seated next to them.  That will introduce variety into the stands, because frankly, we were a little freaked out when we watched them play last Tuesday.

    7.  Advertisments.  We can’t top the “Welcome To Manchester” advert.  But we will keep it, and put more of them up, everywhere.  You won’t be able to walk down the street in Manchester without seeing loads of them.  We will also put them up in Manchester, New Hampshire and Manchester, Ohio.  The locals won’t have a clue what they’re about, but we don’t care.  We just want to use Carlos to frighten them a bit.  That’ll teach them to buy our chocolate factories.
