    7 Reasons That the Hot Toddy is THE Winter Drink

    The hot toddy is the winter drink.  Here are seven reasons why.

    1.  They’re Warming.  Hot toddies are hot.  The winter is cold.  Therefore, when you arrive home after any time outdoors, you are probably cold.  Given that the temperature differential between the toddy and your body* is going to be quite substantial, the taking of the toddy will be beneficial to your body temperature and innate sense of wellbeing.

    2.  They’re Medicinal.  Given that it’s winter, you’re probably suffering from some sort of cold/flu/sniffle/sinus-block-green-stuff-induced-torpor.  The hot toddy contains cloves, which help you breathe more easily (if you embed them in the lemon properly).  If you don’t, you may accidentally get one caught in your throat and choke to death.  Still, fear of imminent death makes drinking a hot toddy far more interesting than drinking a cup of tea.

    3.  They’re Convenient.  Don’t have the necessary ingredients for a hot toddy to hand?  Well, firstly, sack your housekeeper.  Secondly, relax.  The hot toddy recipe isn’t some hideously rigid formula that must be adhered to, it’s more a rough guide to creating your own drink: Hot toddy making is an art rather than a science.  If you don’t have any whisky handy, you can use pretty much any other dark or oak-aged spirit; whiskey, brandy, grappa, rum are all acceptable (individually, don’t go mad) and bring a different flavour to proceedings.  You can also – should you find that you’re out of honey – substitute dark sugar, syrup or treacle.  My favourite alternative is maple syrup, which is from Canada, where they have weird canoes and they milk trees.

    4.  They’re Healthy.  Most hot toddy recipes suggest that you use a slice of lemon.  They are wrong.  If you use a quarter of a lemon and squeeze it before putting it in the mug (squeezing the juice into the mug, obviously, don’t just dribble it over the worktop or onto a passing cat) the toddy is much better.  Firstly it uses up a greater quantity of lemon – which is always desirable – and secondly, it puts more lemon juice into the drinker.  Not only does this give you vitamin C, it probably counts as one of your recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables per day so, disregarding clove-choking incidents, you’ll be healthier too and may live for ever.***

    5.  They’re Even Healthier.  One of the things you need to do to fight those wintry ailments is to make sure your blood sugar levels are high.  This will give you the energy you need to carry on regardless/lie down and complain that you are dying (delete as appropriate, based on sex).  This is why they give ill people Lucozade, and this is why you should drink a hot toddy, either preventative or medicinal.  That and they don’t taste of Lucozade.

    6.  They’re Even More Convenient.  You might be thinking that the last thing you want to be doing is messing about with spirits, cloves and lemons every time you want a hot drink, but the good news is that you don’t have to.  Because you can pre-make your hot toddies.  Just put all the ingredients, minus the hot water, into a mug and put it in the fridge (in our kitchen, we have a walk-in refrigerator that we call “the kitchen”).  You can put as many as you want in there.  You might also consider adding a note that says “in case of emergency, add boiling water, stir, bring upstairs to me” or some such.  Your partner/housemates/parents/children/pets/imaginary friend will doubtless appreciate that.

    7.  They Taste Good.  I seem to have forgotten to mention that they taste bloody marvellous.  Plus, the flavour is so strong, that even with a cold, it is still apparent.  And they smell so nice that other people will follow you around the house as you drink one and attempt to steal it, despite having declined your kind offer of one only ten minutes previously.  That always happens.

    *Don’t panic, I know it rhymes.  I shan’t attempt to turn that line into the start of a song.**

    As a special bonus, here’s the recipe:

    Some whisky:  Maybe a little bit more.  A tiny bit more.  Oh, fuck it, another splash won’t hurt me.

    Two teaspoons of honey.

    A quarter of a lemon (squeezed, if you are at all health-conscious)

    Some cloves (4-8).  Embed them in the lemon or you will die.

    Hot water.

    Combine all the ingredients in a mug, then fill with hot water and stir.  Remove teaspoon.  Drink.

    (You can also add a cinnamon stick if you like cinnamon or sticks).

    Hi, Marc here.  It’s Sunday and half of the 7 Reasons team is unwell.  Sadly, its the half that’s writing today’s post; so I’m sorry if you’ve been clicking refresh on the homepage for the last few hours waiting expectantly for this to appear.  Anyway, here it is.

    A glass of mulled wine contains several of your five a day. Probably.

    We’ve brought you recipes before of course.  I’ve given you a recipe for SPAM on a plank, and Jon’s shown you how to remove something from the freezer.  Badly.  But it occurred to me that we’ve never given you a recipe for something you might conceivably like to consume.  And it’s the time of year for it, so here’s my epic recipe for mulled wine that I’ve been inflicting on house-guests every winter since…well…before we had a house.  Or guests.  Anyway, here are the ingredients that you will need:

    2 Bottles of red wine: It doesn’t matter how many people that you are going to give mulled wine too, the correct quantity is always two bottles.  Don’t just use the cheapest wine that you can find as, if you do, your mulled-wine will be mulled-cheap-wine, and no one will like it.  You don’t need to spend very much though, an inexpensive Aussie Shiraz-Cabernet will have enough strong fruit notes and body to support the ingredients, or a cheap Tempranillo.  Just don’t use anything too light of body like a Pinot Noir or a Beaujolais, as it will be overpowered by the other ingredients.

    2 Lemons (quartered).

    2 Oranges (quartered).

    4 Cloves.

    5 Tablespoons of honey.

    1 Cinnamon stick.

    2 Teaspoons of ground ginger.

    Put all of the ingredients into a pan.  Put the pan on the hob.  Turn the hob on (to a low heat).  Stir constantly until the mulled-wine is near boiling point but importantly DO NOT LET THE MULLED-WINE BOIL!  When it boils the alcohol escapes, and you need that in order to suffer your house-guests, (or they will need it to suffer you, in my case).  While it is warming, taste frequently and add any random thing you can think of to improve the flavour.  Last New Year’s Eve, I added a quartered and squeezed satsuma, half a cup of brandy, half a cup of triple sec, a big splash of orange juice and a tsunami of dark rum*.  All of these things work very well in it.  When everything’s in and it’s near boiling point turn the hob off and ladle your mulled-wine into cups, mugs or glasses (glasses without handles will be too hot to hold so only give those to guests you dislike).  You may then drink the mulled-wine.  And as you’re the person that made the delicious, warming, tasty beverage that they enjoyed so, everyone will briefly love you and will happily tolerate you for the remainder of the evening.

    *Several hours after drinking this mulled-wine when we were cracking open the Champagne, we all realised that we were really quite drunk, and were surprised because we’d only consumed a bit of mulled-wine and three or four beers over the course of the evening.  I think I’ve just solved the mystery.

    Guest Post: 7 Reasons That Christmas ALWAYS Gets Me in the End

    It’s Saturday, and the 7 Reasons team have abandoned the sofa in order to rush, blinking out into the sunlight like pit-ponies escaping from their daily labour.  But, fear not, for the  sofa is in safe hands.  Guest hosting this week is the lovely Liz Gregory – that’s right, her of Things to do in Manchester fame – who despite being from Manchester, isn’t going to prattle on about Coronation Street, she’s going to talk about Christmas.  Now settle down, children, and she’ll begin.

    Every year it’s the same. I roll my eyes at those poor souls who have done all their present shopping by August; I can tut as cynically as anyone at the Christmas songs repeated on an endless, hideous loop in certain shops from the beginning of November. I am a grown woman with a full time job, and the shameless commercial enterprise that is Christmas has no place in my busy and important lifestyle. But by December, I’m hooked, brimming with festive excitement. Again. Here’s why….

    Wine, mince pies, crackers, a roaring fire at Christmas

    1.  The weather. Surely even the most hardened and wizened of souls must admit that nothing looks more enticingly festive than a fresh coating of snow, with the power to wipe out an ugly urban landscape of wheelie bins and cat poo, and replace it with pristine perfection. And I say this despite the fact that I am seemingly the only teacher in the UK not to have received a single snow day in the recent bad weather – I have had to go to work and perform the job for which I am paid EVERY SINGLE DAY.

    2.  Rosy-cheeked children. No, not the bratty whiny ones running amok in the supermarket trying to grab everything in sight – they are the ones to avoid if you’re trying to be misty-eyed and non-cynical about Christmas. I mean the angelic ones who assemble at Christmas lights switch-ons, warbling traditional festive songs and obligingly going “ooohhh” when the lights are turned on.

    3.  The Christmas Radio Times. I take enormous comfort in the fact that even though we live in a high-tech, culturally diverse society where we celebrate individuality and cutting-edge modernity, at least fifty percent of the UK will have spent the last week leafing through the Christmas Radio Times, armed with a marker pen, drawing wonky circles around the plethora of bad television they wish to watch this Yuletide. The fact that you will only actually watch three of these programmes is entirely besides the point – the pleasure lies in the selection, not the viewing.

    4.  Alcohol. One of the overwhelming perks of December is that it becomes socially acceptable to consume alcohol at virtually any time of day without anyone raising their eyebrows and calling you an alky. So that means sherry at elevenses is fine, as is bucks fizz at breakfast and Amaretto Sours at lunch. I do not, of course, live like this at other times of the year.

    5.  Decorations. Yes, Nigella is annoying, but I do admire the fact that her house (or her studio-masquerading-as-house, one is never quite sure) appears to be permanently bedecked with fairy lights. I am not brave enough to try to convince my husband that this is acceptable all year round, which means I must make the most of the carte blanche that Christmas brings. Turn the big light off, switch the fairy lights on, and hey presto! Your house instantly looks clean and tidy in the murky pixie gloom.

    6.  Food. I am by nature a most abstemious person, unlikely to over-indulge in any way, but the range of tasty morsels positively flung one’s way at this time of year makes it impossible to refuse. As with the alcohol, it is de rigueur to adjust one’s notions of what acceptably constitutes a balanced meal – as long as you select items from both the savoury AND the sweet party food ranges, you should be absolutely fine.

    7.  Two weeks off. I enjoy my job, and by anyone’s standards, working in a college in the run up to Christmas must surely be as good a place to be as any. Giant tins of Quality Street lurk at every turn, and teaching English means that the final week offers plenty of chances to watch Wuthering Heights and eat popcorn. And yet, the prospect of two weeks off, spent lolling on the sofa, opening the odd present and reverting to a lifestyle where your mum brings you a cup of tea in bed in the morning, is surely something to be cherished.

    So, if anyone fancies a mince pie or three in the semi-gloom of my Nigella kitchen I’ll see you shortly; only visitors bearing sherry will be admitted, mind.

    Welcome to another Saturday. We can’t take credit for the weekend, but we can take credit for the sensational Guest Post slot. Over the last year we have had a diverse mix of guest post, but the one thing we haven’t had is someone telling us why we should go out to eat. Today that changes as we are joined on the 7 Reasons sofa by Sophie Jenkins. I say we are ‘joined’, that’s not exactly true. The 7 Reasons sofa has been abandoned somewhere between York and Kent due to snow. So Sophie is actually alone. But that’s good because she can put her feet up. Which is not something you can do if you eat out. But that’s the only disadvantage there is, as Sophie now explains. And if you like what you read you may well want to check out Bookatable.     1.  Laziness. The first obvious reason is ease. Just go out to eat! No cooking, no washing up all those pans (pans are the worst, cutlery is easy), no cleaning the mess you made in the kitchen. Just book a table, turn up at the restaurant, order, eat, pay and leave. Preferably in that order. In the words of Aleksandr the meerkat – Simples!

    2.  Shopping. No food shopping, trudging around busy and noisy (and often freezing cold) supermarkets trying to decide what on earth to buy. Even if you have a recipe in mind, the supermarket will no doubt have run out of the ingredients you need, or they will be too bizarre to ever feature on the shelves anyway. If you do find the necessary ingredients after hours of hunting, you then have the fun of lugging heavy bags home too! None of this at a restaurant, because of…..

    3.  Service. These are perhaps all following the ‘lazy’ thread, but at a restaurant you are not only allowed to be lazy, you are meant to be lazy. People are there to wait on you hand and foot! Plus it’s not like at home, where your parents/partner/younger sibling/flatmate have a moan about being subjected to your orders – in a restaurant people are paid to serve you and not complain about it! Dream come true?

    4.  Taste. What are you going to cook at home? Spaghetti bolognaise again?! Boring. Maybe you will try to branch out and cook something new. Erm, this doesn’t taste right…Just eat out! You can eat food you would never in a million years be able to cook, try food you have never seen or heard of before! Even if you do order the usual spag bol, it’s going to taste better than what you would have thrown together at home. Do you have a Michelin star? No. Does the chef at the restaurant? Well, that depends on the restaurant I suppose.

    5.  Safety. Oops, is the microwave meant to be flaming? You can eat pork medium-rare, right? What happened to the hamster…? No risk of fire, flooding, and much less risk of food poisoning. It is much safer to ditch the oven and eat out every night instead. Let a professional take care of the difficult and dangerous bits, while you sit in comfort and stress-free safety.

    6.  Convenience. A friend/grandparent/in-law wants to see you for lunch. The house looks like a bomb has hit it from the party you had the night before. You woke up late, hungover, and definitely don’t have time to tidy the mess AND cook an impressive meal! Meet at a restaurant instead! There is no need for anyone to set foot in the nightmare that is your house, or any chance of that impressive meal becoming an inedible disaster. Eating out makes life so much easier (and if you foot the bill it still looks like you made a huge effort).

    7.  Surprise. When you pop into a restaurant, you never know who you will meet – Johnny Depp might be sat at the table next to you (fingers and toes crossed)! He is, however, less likely to turn up at your house for your spicy chilli, no matter how infamous it may be (have to cross your toes as well as fingers for that one).

    7 Reasons You Should Not Kayak Across The Pacific Ocean

    If you are one of these hipsters who likes to engage in social networking via the likes of facebook and twitter, it is very likely that one, two or maybe all of your friends have posted a ‘funny’ piece of travel advice they have found on Google Maps. I say ‘funny’ in inverted commas because it is actually a very serious matter. The matter I refer to is the ‘joke’ that tells prospective travellers to make the journey from the USA to Japan via the Pacific Ocean in a kayak. How utterly irresponsible. There are many, many reasons why one should not do as Google Maps suggests, but to save my sanity (and your life) here are just seven.

    7 Reasons You Should Not Kayak Across The Pacific Ocean

    1.  Food. An average kayaker will travel at 5mph. Given that Google Maps says the distance – via Hawaii – between USA and Japan is 2,756 miles, it will take the adventurer just over 551 hours to make the journey. That’s a touch under 23 days. That’s 23 days worth of food you have to take with you. Now, assuming – as is very likely considering the departure point – that the traveller is American, that’s 89,537 calories. Or 92.7 Big Mac Meals. A kayak has storage for about 20 Big Mac Meals. You do the maths.

    2.  Sharks. The good news is, that out of the 440 species of shark found on our planet, only 36 of them exist in the Pacific Ocean. (Approximately. I am sure others visit for a day now and then.) Unfortunately, within the 36 species is the Great White Shark. The Great White Shark accounts for 20% of worldwide shark attacks. And, just before you come back at me with the stat, ‘of the 108 unprovoked attacks within the Pacific Ocean in the 20th century, only five included kayakers,’ let me tell you that there has never, ever been a Great White Shark attack on a plane.

    3.  Paddle. You may have heard of the phrase, ‘Up the creek without a paddle’. For those of you who haven’t, it basically means you are in a very serious situation and you haven’t got a bloody clue how you are going to get out of it. If you drop your paddle between the USA and Japan, you can change the word ‘creek’ for ‘Pacific’ but you can’t change the meaning.

    4.  Iodine. The average human will die if they go for more than three days without water. Luckily, in the Pacific Ocean you will find loads of it. Unluckily, if you drink too much of it, you will also die. That’s because it’s saltwater. If you are going to survive you are going to have to desalinate the seawater. You can do this by either attaching a desalination plant to your kayak – in which case you’ll sink before you even leave the beach – or you can use iodine. You will have to leave ten Big Mac Meals behind, but to survive it is probably worth it. The problem comes when you try and desalinate your beaker of water. You’re in a kayak. On the ocean. It’s bumpy. You have your paddle in one hand, the iodine in the other and the beaker between your legs. Now, I’ve never tried desalinating my penile appendage, but if I did, the middle of the Pacific Ocean, in a kayak, is a place where I know I couldn’t possibly fail. Unless…

    5.  A Sudden Wave hits the kayak. In which case the iodine might go overboard and desalinate the whole of the Ocean. You are going to murder many, many saltwater fish. And you’re heading to Japan. A country that’s built on fish (one in ten fish is eaten there). They’re not going to greet you warmly are they?

    6.  Tankers. Generally these are big ships who have very little interest in small-fry like you in your kayak. Mainly because they are always on auto-pilot while the captain has a snooze. If you just happen to be having a snooze at the same time, you are going to get crushed. And, just a warning, if you do survive, there is no point in shouting ‘Tanker!’ at them and waving your fist, if you do, you’ll miss the giant squid that’s about to squirt you with ink.

    7.  Jovan Pestoric Will Kiss You. In doing my research for this post – I came across the following Yahoo! Answers page where Lovely had asked if it was possible to kayak across the Pacific Ocean. There were only a few answers. One gave Lovely some valuable advice and advised it was not possible. They then said ‘Have fun!’. Then Javon Pestoric announced, ‘yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! omg if u do it ill kiss u’. I have no idea who Jovan is and, if watching people kayak over the Pacific Ocean is his kind of fetish, I don’t think I want to know either.

    7 Reasons My Italian Self-Teaching May Get Me Into Trouble

    Hello. I’m on a plane. At least I am if you are reading this at 9am on Monday morning. If you are reading it at 9pm on Monday evening then I bloody well hope I’m not on a plane and if you are reading it in June 2014, well, I couldn’t really care less. I’m assuming, as I write, that it is 9am on Monday morning and I am currently on a plane that is destined for Italy. Yes, I’m going on holiday. I thought you’d be pleased. Over the last week, I have done a little language based learning. And, in what is quite a coincidence, I have been learning Italian. Unfortunately, I am not the best when it comes to languages. Partly because I always sound a bit Indian when speaking with another tongue and partly because I just can’t be bothered with it. Which, I admit, is an abysmal attitude to have, but I will gladly take any applause you are prepared to give me for honesty. As a result of these two factors, the Italians might be in for something of a shock. Here’s why:

    1.  Accents. My Italian accent isn’t very good. Unless you like Italian accents that sound Indian. I imagine the Italians don’t.

    2.  What A Mistaka To Maka. I can’t help it. Without a teacher I revert to learning my Italian from Allo! Allo! clips on YouTube. I keep adding the letter ‘a’ onto anything I say. Oh, and I’m speaking English.

    3.  Roma! Lazio! The only words I can pronounce with any confidence are the names of football clubs or, indeed, names of footballers. I may get away with randomly shouting ‘Cannavaro!’ and ‘Del Piero!’ but I imagine I would not with ‘Totti!’. And, talking about football, Italy are playing Serbia tomorrow night. Along with many people in the 1990s, I watched Football Italia on Channel 4. And, along with many people, I always assumed the phrase uttered at the end of the opening credits – ‘Golaccio!’ – meant…

    4.  ‘Goal Lazio!!’. That’s what it sounded like after all. You can see it here if you need reminding/have no idea what I’m going on about. Now ‘Golaccio’ may seem like a sensible thing to say if Lazio’s Sergio Floccari finds the back of the net for his national side. But it wouldn’t be. For the simple reason that the word is actually ‘Golazo’. And it’s Spanish. And despite finding this out, I know it’s not going to make any bloody difference. I am still going to shout ‘Golazo!’ if Italy score. Or Spain. Or Serbia. Or England. Because that’s me. And no one would have me any other way.

    5.  French. The only language I have ever learnt – apart from English and Latin obviously – is French. And, despite years of trying to forget such nonsense, I still seem to remember a fair bit of it. And the reason I know this is because unwelcome words keeps slipping into my otherwise expertly recited Italian phrases, ‘Buon giorno. Parla inglese, s’il vous plaît?’. If someone started asking me a question in English and then slipped in something about frogs-legs, I’d be furious. I would expect the Italians to be similar.

    6.  Hands. Whether it’s a myth or not, Italian’s are famous for their hand gestures. So I’ve been practising mine too. So far, I have the ‘bang on desk’, the ‘I’ve got the whole world in my hands’ and the ‘bunny shadow’ gestures in my repetoire. And they make very little sense with my Italian/French/Indian speil.

    7.  Pizza. I spent much of my time in the week before Rome, practising the pronunciation of pizza names using a Pizza Express menu. As a result I am unlikely to be able to eat anything other than pizza for the whole week. While this is not a problem in itself, the fact that I can only pronounce Margherita with any confidence, could be.

    Russian Roulette Sunday: A Recipe

    It’s Russian Roulette Sunday again (and ordinary Sunday too) and we’ve realised something:  We’ve never given our readers a recipe before.  We’ve requested them when under pressure; we’ve offered general lifestyle advice on how to do food correctly; and on how food should be consumed, but we’ve never been specific about how to prepare it.  Until now.

    This isn’t our own recipe, it’s one that we stumbled across on the internet while doing something else.  But it’s safe to say that we were amazed by it.  Flabbergasted.  Dumbfounded.  It’s a perfectly genuine recipe that features in an advert for the main ingredient and we haven’t in any way made it up.

    In the past, we may have created and altered posters and passed them off as genuine, but we did that because we didn’t think that anyone would believe us, and we certainly didn’t imagine that thousands of people around the world would download those posters, presumably to use in essays and school projects.  In fact, we feel fairly confident that, as World War II recedes further into history, and internet content becomes ever-more readily-accepted, those posters will come to be seen as genuine, and we – in our usual hapless manner – will have inadvertently caused a revision of history.  We’re actually dreading the day that one of our posters turns up in a newspaper, or a book.  Anyway, we’ve learned our lesson, and this poster is categorically not one of our creations.

    You’re probably feeling a little peckish by now so, Ladies and Gentlemen, discerning readers of 7 Reasons (.org), we present to you, without any further ado…Planked SPAM.

    Now, to some people, a meal consisting of SPAM on a plank might seem a little unconventional or unappetising, but rest assured:  When you unveil this culinary master-stroke with a flourish, it will be “…greeted with cheers” by your jubilant dinner-guests.  The advert says so, so it must be true.  We’re not sure what wood the plank should be made from, though pine would probably be nice and fragrant, and less tough than oak.  But you can experiment with your own planks, we wouldn’t want to ruin the fun.  Let us know how you get on.

    7 Reasons to Leave Your Car at Home

    It’s World Car-Free Day today.  And to celebrate, here are seven reasons to leave your car at home.

    1.  It’s Healthier.  Rather than driving to work, and getting stressed and aggravated at the wheel of a car on the way, you can cycle instead.  It’s much better for you, and you won’t just be sitting there, impotently experiencing road rage, so you’ll feel really good and be a lot healthier as a result.  Well, until you get run over by a minicab and offered a fight by a disproportionately cross man in a white pick-up truck, that is.  But that doesn’t happen every day.  Some days it’s a blue one.

    2.  There Are Buses Available.  In order to reduce the traffic on the road and free it up to make more room for areas that are coned-off for no apparent reason, you can take the bus to work.  Because it’s always fun to ride in a vehicle in which the driver treats the accelerator as an on/off button, and in which anyone sitting on the upper deck is likely to experience motion sickness from the swaying as it rounds corners at improbable speeds.  Not to mention the persistent nagging doubt that the bus will topple over.  That’s where the real terror lies.  Still, fear of death is life-affirming, so you’ll feel better as a result.

    3.  The Environment.  Cars produce a lot of pollution*, and anyone that’s ever walked along the pavement next to a queue of traffic in the morning will be able to testify to the amount of noise-pollution that they emit.  From the teenagers in the Vauxhall Corsa playing neurofunk at stomach-churning levels to the grey-faced businessmen listening to BBC Radio 4 at such a volume that, though you try not to listen, you can actually feel the shipping forecast reverberating through your skeleton as you walk past, traffic is intrusively noisy.  But don’t panic.  Though you may feel faint through sheer boredom on hearing the shipping forecast, it won’t actually kill you.  Unless you concentrate on it quite hard.

    4.  The Train.  You may be able to get the train to work.  This will help you gain a new perspective on time and, as you realise that time, in fact, does not exist, and is just a series of made up numbers wholly unrelated to maths or the concept of measurement, you’ll relax and eventually come to enjoy starting your working day at lunchtime.  Or 08:57, as First Capital Connect call it.

    5.  Parking Vouchers.  Because you’ve paid for that parking permit, damn it. And every minute that your car is parked on the street outside your house you’re getting value for money. And eventually, if your car is parked outside your house for long enough, you’ll begin to turn a profit.  Surely?

    6.  The Tube.  Perhaps you live near an underground railway.  And there’s no experience like getting together with a few thousand other people in a tin can and all trying not to look at each other (or at each other’s reflections in the window, that’s an amateur mistake).  Ever wanted to know what you’d smell like if you didn’t bathe for a week?  Go and stand next to a fat man in a cheap suit on a tube train.  Then go home and shower.  For a long time.

    7.  Because It’s A Good Idea.  It’s actually a good idea to leave your car at home occasionally.  Even if it turns out that the car is the most effective mode of transport for you, you’ll at least have explored the alternatives available.  And if it isn’t, then you’ll have learned something valuable.  Like discovering that bananas are easier to eat than apples, or that you enjoy eating gorgonzola more that you enjoy eating paté, or that kiwis give you more energy than a Mars bar.  Or that you’re much hungrier than you thought you were.

    7 Reasons That I’m Sick Of The Lemons

    On Monday, I started my bank holiday project: A batch of limoncello.  It’s a simple enough liqueur to make, requiring a couple of litres of vodka, some sugar and lemon zest.  A lot of lemon zest.  The zest of twenty-four lemons.  Here are seven reasons that I’m now sick of the lemons.

    1.  Peeling Them.  Ever peeled a lemon?  It’s the second dullest activity known to man (or woman).  You have to be careful not to get any of the pith with the zest, so it takes a long time.  I peeled twenty-four of the things. I have no idea exactly how long I was in the kitchen, but I do know that I had a ginger beard when I emerged from it.  I had one when I went in too, but I was definitely in there for a very long time.  Peeling lemons.

    2.  Poor Planning.  “Errrr. Ummm. Errrr.  Have a lemon, darling.”  That’s what I said when my wife – not unreasonably – enquired what I was going to do with twenty-four peeled lemons.  This is because, caught up in my enthusiasm for making the limoncello, I had forgotten that a by-product of lemon zest is lemons.  Lots of lemons.  I decided to put them in the fridge, certain that we would be able to use them.

    3.  Juice.  Our fridge was already quite full.  So full, in fact, that I had to remove several jars of jam, a bag of onions that pre-dated the internet, and all – except for two – bottles of beer, to fit the large, overflowing bowl of peeled lemons in.  Eventually, two days later, desperate to free up fridge space for more beer, I had a brainwave.  Lemon juice.  I would juice half of the lemons.  This would free up space in the fridge and enable me to put beer in there.  Ever juiced twelve lemons?  It’s the dullest activity known to man (or woman).  After what seemed like a fortnight of squeezing lemons, I put the (surprisingly still quite full) bowl – now containing half the original number of lemons – back into the fridge.  Then I had to remove the remaining bottles of beer in order to make room for the two bottles of lemon juice.  Brilliant.

    4.  Drinks.  As there was now no cold beer in the house, and many, many lemons, I decided to have a cocktail week.  The things that I have drunk at home in cocktail week have included: lemon drop martinis, gin fizzes, whisky sours and tom collinseseseses.  Hic.  All of these cocktails contain lemon juice, of which there is still a lot.  Probably enough to keep Amy Winehouse in lemon-based cocktails for several months.  Still, one of the benefits of having had lemon-based cocktails all week is that they’re a perfect match for…

    5. Our Food.  The meals that we’ve eaten in the past four days have been (in no particular order): pancakes with sugar and lemon juice, linguine in lemon cream sauce with smoked salmon, fish finger sandwiches with tartar sauce and lemon, and home-made bread and lemon summer soup.  I have no idea what we’re having for tea this evening, but I sense that it may involve a lemon.  And I don’t want to eat any more lemons.  I think I may be turning yellow.  And then there’s…

    6.  The Smell.  The fridge smells of lemons.  The kitchen smells of lemons.  I smell of lemons.  My wife smells of lemons.  The entire ground floor of the house smells of lemons.  Our cat now lives in the garden because of the smell of lemons.  Our neighbours have been looking at us strangely all week, presumably because of the smell of lemons emanating from our house.  If you were to send a letter to:

    7.  The Lemons Are Seemingly Infinite.  Despite having consumed so many lemons that my blood is now 29% citric acid; despite having reduced half of their number to juice; despite having made my wife  consume so many lemons that she could possibly use it as grounds for divorce – “Being married to him was horrible, m’lud.  He filled the kitchen with bicycles and forced me to eat lemons.” – there are still many, many bloody lemons in the fridge.  At the current rate of consumption, they will probably last for about three months…

    …which is when the limoncello will be ready.  Will this lemon-hell never end?

    Bear Enjoys Picnic1.  Where Are You Going? If you are off to a day of Polo, you probably don’t want to be taking along some of Lidl’s less-than-finest Scotch Eggs. People will look down on you. Even if they are sitting down themselves. And at the other end of the scale, you probably don’t want to be taking along your Selfridges’ Hamper if you’ve managed to get a ticket for Millwall Football Club’s ‘Grand Day Out In Leeds’.

    2.  Do You Have Any Suncream? No? Good. No one is going to mistake it for the mayonnaise then.

    3.  How Much Food Do You Have? This isn’t so much about the number of bags you are taking with you, more the size of the blanket. You don’t want so much food that the only way you can sit down is by playing twister around the sausage rolls. Nor do you want so little food that you wish you’d just brought a flannel instead.

    4.  Do You, Or Anyone You Know, Suffer From Picnic Envy? It’s always a difficult one this, you are happily munching on a pork pie when you suddenly get a whiff of something quite extraordinary. Either than or you spin round and see someone with a better set of cutlery. It’s enough to ruin the atmosphere. And make you play Frisbee a bit closer to those with the Chicken Cordon Bleu than is strictly necessary.

    5.  Have You Checked The Weather Forecast? Even if it says it is going to be sunny and thirty degrees, you can be certain that it will rain. A practical solution, therefore, is to take all-weather food and drink. Melon for instance. And water. Sandwiches are a definite no-no and despite what people say, even the sturdiest of celery sticks can go limp in a thunderstorm.

    6.  Are You Fully Equipped? By this I mean, do you have the bottle opener/corkscrew? The one thing park rangers frown upon is picnickers trying to open a bottle of Cava using irregular practices. Like using the numberplate of their jeep.

    7.  Are You Going Into A Forest? Bears like food. They like people too.
