    7 Reasons That I Hate The Mayor Of Vilnius

    Unless you have been on the moon for the past few days (and perhaps even if you have) you will have seen this video of the mayor of Vilnius keeping the cycle lanes clear in his city by crushing illegally parked vehicles with a tank. This video has been everywhere.  And it’s annoyed me.  A lot.  Here are 7 Reasons that I hate the mayor of Vilnius.

    1.  The Mayor Of Vilnius Is A Liar.  The message in the video is that if you park in the cycle lane, the mayor of Vilnius will crush your car with a tank.  But he doesn’t have a tank.  Look at it.  Look at it!  It’s got wheels and there’s a distinctive lack of a huge gun at the front to shoot things with, tracks and other tank-y accoutrements that are the universally acknowledged signifiers that the vehicle is a tank.  That means that it’s not a tank. What it is, is an armoured personnel carrier.  What it is not, is a tank.  The mayor of Vilnius is fibbing.

    2.  The Mayor Of Vilnius Is In The Least Convincing Video Ever.  I have seen theatre sets that look less staged than this video.  I have seen ham actors less hammy than the acting in this video.  In fact, I’ve seen entire pig farms less hammy than the acting this video.  The man that gets “his” car crushed is the single worst actor that I have ever seen, and I’ve seen Piers Brosnan.  The video wouldn’t be less believable if it was narrated by Jeffrey Archer.  No it would.  But still, it’s not a convincing video.

    3.  The Mayor Of Vilnius Hates The Poor.  During the video, there are three examples of illegal parking.  In the first two, a Rolls-Royce and a Ferrari are illegally parked and are not run over by the mayor of Vilnius in an armoured personnel carrier.  A third illegally parked car (a knackered old Mercedes worth almost nothing) is run over by the mayor of Vilnius in an armoured personnel carrier.  What sort of message does this send?  Poor people of Vilnius: The mayor of Vilnius is after your cars.  Run (drive?) for your lives, he’s got a grudge against the impoverished and an armoured personnel carrier and he’s not afraid to use it!  The message it sends out to the wealthy is somewhat different though.  Rich people of Vilnius: Feel free to park wherever you like.  Sit back, relax, and eat a diamond or two while you enjoy the spectacle of a man menacing the poor with a “tank”.  This is not a nice message to send out.

    4.  The Mayor Of Vilnius Is The Wrong Man For The Job.  People like to have sensible, solid, reliable citizens as their mayors.  Qualities that they don’t like in a mayor are publicity-hunger and buffoonery.  The evidence for that is clear:  The population of the world is 7 billion people and the population of London is 7.7 million people.  This means that by far the vast majority of the planet’s population choose to live in the world, which is outside London.  If they wanted a buffoon for a mayor, they’d live in London where, incidentally, everything within in the cycle lane is mown down by taxis.  The people have spoken and we don’t want buffoons.

    5.  The Mayor Of Vilnius Is Missing The Point.  Why does it even matter if people are parking in the cycle lanes there?  Judging by the film, it would appear that Vilnius is the world’s emptiest city.  The mayor of Vilnius seems to be some sort of latter day Omega Man cruising the deserted streets in his armoured personnel carrier desperately searching for signs of life.  The only person using the cycle lanes in Vilnius is the mayor of Vilnius.  Why not use the empty road?  No one will ever know.

    6.  The Mayor Of Vilnius Isn’t Even A Proper Mayor.  He’s obviously the mayor by default because he’s the only citizen of Vilnius.  Look what happens after he crushes the Mercedes:  He has to stop and clean up the glass.  He’s the parking enforcement officer, the military, the mayor and the street cleaner all rolled into one.  If the mayor of Vilnius became embroiled in a corruption scandal – a quite common occurrence in local government – he’d end up having to arrest himself, but that would be okay, because he’d be able to pay himself a bribe and get the whole thing swept under the carpet.  Then he’d be free to win the next mayoral election by a margin of one.  Again.  Doesn’t the man have any ambition?  Why doesn’t he enact a constitutional monarchy and appoint himself King of Vilnius?  Emperor?  God of Vilnius!  If you’re self-appointed, think big!

    7.  It All Boils Down To Envy.  It looks like fun.  I want a go.

    7 Reasons That Series II of Downton Abbey Will Be Even Better Than Series I

    Downton Abbey, ITV’s very enjoyable and successful Sunday evening drama has had a second series commissioned.  This is brilliant news as it is the best thing that ITV has produced for ages, possibly even ever.  And the great thing is that the second series is going to be even better than the first.  Here are seven reasons why.

    1.  The Writing Will Be Better.  Julian Fellowes is a terrific writer and his historical knowledge and nuanced eye make Downton Abbey a brilliant evocation of an Edwardian life of privilege.  And, as absolutely everything improves with practice and revision, the writing will be even better in the second series:  The first time he wrote Gosford Park, it was Gosford Park, which was quite good.  The second time he wrote Gosford Park, it was Downton Abbey, which was very good, and the third time he writes Gosford Park, it will be Downton Abbey: Series 2, which will surely be amazing.  If they commission a few more series, Downton Abbey will eventually become the best written thing in the history of television.

    2.  The Opening. The first series of Downton Abbey opened with the news of the sinking of the Titanic reaching the house.  Having the heirs to the house die in the Titanic tragedy was a terrific device which acted as the catalyst for many of the storylines.  Series two can repeat this by killing off the current heir to Downton Abbey in the sinking of the Lusitania, and then we can begin the search for an heir all over again.  Only this time we might get one with a chin and a personality.

    3.  The Limp.  One of the dominant storylines of series one has been Bates’ limp.  The consternation that it has caused has resonated throughout the series with many repercussions for both the house’s residents and staff.  The First World War setting of season two will offer far greater scope for the characters to be intolerant of the disabled causing, as it surely will, characters to maim themselves fighting the Bosch from a trench.  Perhaps a new downstairs hierarchy will develop based on the amount of available limbs a servant has.  It’s like taking the limp storyline and escalating it.

    4.  Maggie Smith. Redoubtable battleaxe, the Dowager Countess, stole the show when she enquired over dinner, “The weekend?  What is a weekend?”.  The war will provide far greater scope for lofty and disdainful incomprehension, bringing as it will, a whole new vocabulary of dreadnoughts, zeppelins, trench foot, doughboys, big berthas, whizz-bangs and Kaisers.  Though she probably already knows who the Kaiser is, “Rum fellow, typical foreign-type, no notion of how to dress for luncheon and abominable taste in hats.”  The moment she exclaims, “A zeppelin has bombed Hull?  What is this Hull of which you speak?” will be priceless.

    5.  Conscription. There’ll be great scope for new and interesting characters because of conscription.  And, while the third reserve under-butler’s valet’s second footman is away having his head blown off at the Somme, who knows what could happen back at Gosfor Downton Abbey.  Any manner of earth-shattering things could occur.  Women may have to take on some of the tasks usually performed by the menfolk.  The scope for revolutionary gender-role reassignment is immense.  Perhaps they’ll find themselves selecting cufflinks, removing lint from a man’s jacket or winding up a clock.  A maid might open the front door!  Anarchy.

    6.  Order. The version of pastoral care the paternal Earl metes out to his wards will be tested to the limit in series two, as the poverty and lack of privation that war brings begins to impinge on life at Downton.  How will he dispense justice when the newly widowed ladies-maid’s kitchen-maid’s undermaid is caught pilfering part of a silver cruet set?  How will he deal with the theft of three of his grouse by a hungry poacher named Higgins (all poachers are called Higgins, I don’t know why).  How will he react to the wooing of a ladies maid by an itinerant muffin man?  It’s going to be great.

    7.  Suitors.  Once she’s been forbidden to go into nursing by the Dowager Countess, (“Nursing?  A lady tending commoners?  The moon will surely implode,”)  the eldest daughter will continue her Downton life pretty much unaltered, except with more varied suitors.  Instead of being wooed by a succession of avaricious dullards in black tie, she’ll be wooed by a succession of avaricious dullards dressed in khaki.  And that will wholly justify paying the licence fee for a colour television.  We can’t wait.

    7 Reasons Not to Write in the Park

     

    Last week, I wrote a piece entitled 7 Reasons To Write In The Park.  I did this because it was a nice day and I thought it would be a good idea to combine a visit to my local park with writing,  Having come up with the title for the piece before I set off, I felt duty-bound to complete it, even though my experience showed me that the park isn’t the ideal place to write at all.  This is why.

    1.  Sunshine. It was sunny in the park.  I discovered that sunlight is incompatible with writing as I couldn’t see what was on the screen of my laptop.  I’m not the most accurate of typists and being able to see what I’m keying in is vital to me.  After I’d finished writing, I returned home to find that I’d written this:

     

    I had to spend hours rewriting it from memory.  Indoors.

    2.  The Descent Of Man. There’s an ice cream vendor at my local park so I bought an ice cream which, as it was a hot sunny day, melted and made both of my hands very sticky.  I needed to type but I didn’t have a tissue or a wet wipe with me;  because I’m not very organised and also because I’m not a woman (I don’t even own a dress).  I ended up having to clean my hands by dragging them around on the grass.  And so it was that I, a modern man, was reduced to savagery by something as simple as a defrosting confection.  Pathetic.

    3.  Women. There were scantily clad women sunbathing in the park; some of them were reading too.  This is a distraction I never encounter when writing at home and I got quite hot under the collar (an idiomatic one, I’m not a dog).  As I sat there trying to write, I found myself thinking about how attractive women with books are.  For reasons that I can’t fathom, a woman reading Dostoyevsky is at least 70% more attractive than a similar looking woman that isn’t reading anything.  I was supposed to be writing and instead, I found myself just sitting there, wondering if I’m a book fetishist or even if there is such a thing.  Is it the paper?  Is it the font?  Is it the rustling sound of the turning pages?  Anyway, the upshot was that I lost at least half an hour of writing time worrying that I’m some sort of biblio-pervert.

    4.  Ducks. It’s not possible to write anything near a duck.  I know, I’ve tried.  They do three things that are distracting; they quack, they waddle and they sleep with their heads facing backwards.  How are you supposed to write anything near a creature like that?

    5.  Words. I overheard a man and a woman that were seated near me on a bench.  I listened, because you never know if you might be able to use what you hear as dialogue later on.  The woman had a very distracted, slightly disconnected, manner of speech; she would leave long pauses mid-sentence before eventually resuming.  At one point she said “…of course, Mike would fall for her…she’s very…”.  It was during the final pause that the word bendy popped into my head and caused me to burst into – what outwardly appeared to be spontaneous – laughter.  The couple – who had previously observed me dragging my hands around on the ground – soon moved on, presumably a little concerned.  Or even a lot concerned.

    6.  Tan. I thought I’d tanned slightly while I was writing in the park but it turns out that I hadn’t.  The following morning I woke with one red arm.  It’s a completely different colour to my other arm but, as my highly amused wife pointed out to me, it does go better with the kitchen.

    7.  Just Because. I don’t know what I was thinking,  Trying to write in the park was clearly a foolish act.  It’s the wrong thing to do there: it’s not what parks are for.  I should have been running around with a ball or a Frisbee (again, I feel I should stress that I’m not a dog) or reading or feeding the ducks.  Writing there was a disaster.  In conclusion; if you need to write anything, the park’s the wrong place to do it.*

    *And it’s full of book-perverts.

    7 Reasons To Write In The Park

    Something amazing happened yesterday; the sun came out in Yorkshire.  With a mixture of delirium, excitement and astonishment I abandoned my plans and headed off to my local park.  I decided to justify this dereliction of home improvement duty by coming up with 7 Reasons To Write In The Park.

    1.  Fitness. I walked to the park, something that probably counts as one of my five portions of exercise per day.  Had I stayed at home to write I would have had to have paced up-and-down to achieve the same effect.  Not for very long, the park’s just around the corner, but still, it all helps.

     

    2.  Ice Cream. There is no ice cream in my house, but my local park has an ice cream vendor.  I love ice cream, and it turns out that it’s a brilliant accompaniment to writing, better even than the bananas that usually fuel my compositions.  Obviously your local park might not have ice cream, but it’s not my fault if your park sucks and mine doesn’t.

     

    3.  Inspiration. While I was writing in the park two middle-aged men, deep in conversation, walked past me and I overheard one of them exclaim, “…I don’t even own a dress!”  I have no idea what the context was, but at some point I’ll be able to use this in something.  It’s currently a monologue, but eventually, I may be able to use it as dialogue – or perhaps even trialogue – if such a thing exists.  Those words came free at the park; I wouldn’t have heard anyone say them at home.  And by that, I don’t mean that I own a dress, I mean that I wouldn’t be saying it aloud to myself while writing.  My wife wouldn’t say it either.  She has loads of the things.  They’re everywhere.

     

    4.  Sunlight. Often, when writing, the location of the writer means that they don’t see much sunlight.  In my case, I usually write near a window in a West facing room in North Yorkshire so I’m more likely to see a unicorn piloting a zeppelin to Greenland than I am to see the sun.  Yesterday, however, as I emerged from my house blinking and startled into the sunlight and headed off to the park it felt good.  I may have even tanned slightly while writing!  Extraordinary.

     

    5.  Ducks. There are ducks in the park.  Ducks are among the cutest animals in the world; they’re amazing.  Right about now, you’re probably asking yourself: How did the ducks help with the writing?  Well, if I hadn’t seen the ducks, I wouldn’t have mentioned them and these words wouldn’t be here and you’d just be staring at a blank screen.  That’s how the ducks helped.  Bet you’re glad I didn’t see geese.

     

    6.  Comparison. When I write at home I write in a room full of books.  From my desk I can see a sizable collection of exalted works by a canon of noteworthy authors.  This is intimidating company for anyone trying to write anything.  In the park, I was free from any feelings of inferiority and was able to scrawl my hackneyed musings…er…compose my insightful witticisms unabashed.  I did briefly sight a man that resembled the late poet Philip Larkin, but it wasn’t him.  The real Philip Larkin would never have tripped over a sunbather.

     

    7.  Just Because. It’s just nice in the park.  It was a glorious day and had I stayed at home I’d have been obliged to varnish the garden furniture or paint a wall or something.  But I didn’t.  I went to the park, had a good time writing and was nearer to the pub when I’d finished.  The whole experience left me feeling thoroughly happy and with a great sense of well-being.  In conclusion; if you need to write anything, the park’s the place to do it.*

     

    *Unless you’re Philip Roth or James Ellroy, I don’t need the pressure.
